Smashburger

When this new up-and-coming burger chain moved into Overland Park, Kyle and I checked out the website and had never seen a company so enthusiastic about their food. They customize their menu based on the region and aim to be “every city’s favorite burger place.”  Well, they have won our hearts and we hope they win yours as well!

Savor.

Taste:  While there are a lot of good burgers out there, Smashburger does them well, but also has amazingly fresh salads and tempting sizzling sides.  Did I mention that their milkshakes are made from real hagen daas ice cream?  They aim for quality on all levels, not just with their burgers.  Make sure to check out their items for vegetarians as well.

Presentation: They have been a little hit and miss here.  Sometimes it’s perfection, sometimes my burger is in a messy heap.  Be careful when you do take-out because the food can get a little soggy, especially the haystack onions.

Originality: In all honesty, it is only a burger joint.  I like it that they customize their menu per region, but other than that, it’s not that original.

Service: Being a fast-casual restaurant, the customer service experience is pretty minimal.

Appearance: They keep their restaurant clean and the Overland Park location is a little narrow and cramped at times.  But they bus their tables pretty quickly and keep everything nicely stocked.

Value: The average burger is about $6 and a sharable side is around $2.  Add a $2 fountain soda, you are at about $9 a person.

Restrooms: Pretty simple but they keep ‘em clean and stocked.

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit

Designed after Texas-style BBQ, Dickey’s Barbecue Pit has been a mainstay of our family since we heard that kids eat free on Sundays.  They drew us in with their Sunday special and we keep on coming back for more because of their great bites at rock bottom prices. And with unlimited soft-serve- what is there not to love about this place?

Pile on the Sauce

Taste: Their slow-cooked meats are cooked to mouth-watering perfection.  They have a wide variety of sauces and my favorite is the original.  Make sure to get some “onion tangles” and Kyle loves their mac n’ cheese.

Presentation: All of the food comes in little baskets and just remember, it ain’t gormet, it’s bbq.  Just relax and dig in.

Originality: This is only a bbq place, but one thing that does make it stick out is it’s Texas-Style meat prep.  All your standard fare can be found here, but it is oh-so-tastey!

Service: The customer service experience here is pretty minimal because all you do is order at the front, they hand you the food and then you’re done.  You fill your own drinks and bus your own table so the focus is more on the food than the service.

Appearance: With cozy tables with blue calico tables clothes and a few TVs up, eating at Dickey’s feels very close to home.  They run children’s programing on one TV and sports on the other so everybody has something to watch.

Value: Every sandwich meal comes with two sides and runs about $9, not including drinks.      Since kids eat free on Sundays, we can pile high the food for all four of us for about $20.  They also run several different weeknight specials, check out their website for more info.

Restrooms:  Nothing special here, but they keep ‘em clean.

So next time it’s Sunday and you have a hankering for some good bbq, hit up Dickey’s and we’ll see ya there!

Mimi’s Cafe

With a warm enviorment and low prices, I have enjoyed going to Mimi’s Cafe since I was a little girl.  This easy-going diner modeled after cafes in France is nice enough to take your friends to and yet also great for kids.

Bonjour!

Sit Down and Stay for Awhile.

Taste: They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner but I love them the best for a late-breakfast.  They have an espresso bar and the buttermilk spice muffin is to die for!  While the flavors aren’t mind-blowing or original, they have consistently good food.

Presentation: Sometimes the food feels a little crowded on their small plates, but they use warm colored plates and fresh garnishes.

Originality:  Even though they claim to be a French Cafe, it is more like a classic American cafe with a French twist.  Think of a place like Marie Calendars.

Service: Very friendly wait-staff they are helpful with the menu.

Appearance: Being a chain restaurant, Mimi’s tends to have a “cookie cutter” feel to it, in that all of their locations are exactly alike.  Their locations are very classy and sweet- just all exactly alike.

Value:  Great bang for your buck and all of their entrees come with sides, etc.  I rarely spend a lot and always leave full.
