Fiorella’s Jack Stack Barbecue

You truly haven’t dined in Kansas City until you have eaten at Fiorella’s Jack Stack Barbecue.  Us locals just call it “Jack Stack.”  Where elegant dining meets amazing barbecue, Jack Stack is the place to impress those out-of-town relatives.  Yum, just thinking about those burnt ends is making me hungry!

…Classy Dining

Taste:  I have lost track of the times that we have eaten at Jack Stack’s and I can tell you, their food is consistent.  Always hot and well seasoned, you can tell that their management has a tight reign on consistency and quality.

Presentation: Nothing too amazing here but the food is always nicely presented.  They serve their iconic onion rings on a little pole and that jazzes things up a bit.

Originality: While there isn’t really anything original about another bbq joint, Jack Stack rises above them all by bringing a classy atmosphere to the bbq experience without sacrificing taste.  Say what you like, but I believe that you don’t need to eat at a gas station to get the best barbecue in town.

Service: My experiences here have been a little mixed.  Sometimes I get a friendly server, sometimes I get a server who is a little more “hands-off.”  We’ve always had nice experiences but some servers have been more attentive than others.

Appearance: The Country Club Plaza location is very lovely with large chandeliers and decor yet it keeps a cozy feel to it also.  I love taking people here for the first time- this restaurant was made to impress!

Value: Meat entrees range from $15 to $30+ and dinner salads around about $10 depending on what you get.  Most entrees come with a side and after everything is said and done, it is plenty of food to share.  Lots of people split entrees two-ways and everybody leaves with full bellies.

Restrooms: Nothing remarkable here, but they are always clean.

Travel Edition- WaWa

Ok you aren’t really going to believe your ears, but WaWa (pronounced “wah-wah”) is a gas station.  That has great food.  What?!? Imagine a really good, clean deli- that also sells gasoline out front.  Intrigued? Read on, friend.  Read on.

Restrooms: Haven’t been.

Come to Kansas City, WaWa!

Taste: When I went to grad school in PA, WaWa was a mainstay of my student diet.  They have such a wide, high-quality selection of food that it is mind-boggling.  They serve both hot and cold breakfast items, subs, soups, salads, wraps, as well as fresh fruit, donuts and coffee.  And the quality is better than many of the local delis and for a gas station, simple astounding.

Presentation: They realize that everybody is on the go, so everything is wrapped up and ready for the road.  Last time I went, I got a coffee and ordered a bagel with cream cheese.  They put the cream cheese on the bagel and it made it easier for me while driving.  They pay good attention to the details- very nice job!

Originality: I mean, do you know of any other gas station that offers a wide variety of high quality food?  I do not!

Service: These folks are quick and friendly!  You order from a computer screen and it prints off your receipt.  You take your receipt to the register, pay for it, and then when your order is ready, they call your number.  Spiffy, isn’t it?  Kyle says that he knows lots of folks that just order their lunch here and save it for later.

Appearance: Very, very clean and neat.

Value: Bakery items are about $1 or less, sandwiches are just under $5 and their very legit coffee is under $2.

Travel Edition- Rita’s Water Ice

If you’re from the Philly/tri-state area, Rita’s Water Ice (pronounced “wooder-ice” by the locals) is the taste of summer.  What is water ice?  Ignore the strange name and just think slushy (or snow cone) meets heaven.  With fresh flavors made daily and a low price point, there is no reason not to check this place out the next time you find yourself on the East Coast.

Flavor meets Refreshing

Taste: With a light, melt-in-your-mouth quality, water ice (also called Italian Ice) is the perfect summer treat.  My favorite flavor is the lemon (their #1 seller) and it’s like thinly shaven ice whipped up with fresh lemon juice.  Just make sure to eat it fast, because it melts quickly.

Presentation: Nothing too special here.  They just scoop it into a cup.  But the bright colors make it a delight for the eyes.

Originality: If you aren’t from the Philly/New Jersey/New York area, you’ve never even heard of Rita’s.  And, I just feel so sorry for you.  These folks are genius and I hope the water ice love spreads throughout this entire country.

Service: Honestly, service isn’t that great.  So don’t let that taint your experience.

Appearance: It is a simple walk-up restaurant with outside dining only.  I usually prefer to eat in the car because of all those friendly summer bugs.

Value: You’ll want to get a small because a size any bigger would melt before you could consume it all.  A small size runs from $3-4.

Also- in addition to water ice, Rita’s also dishes up blended drinks, frozen custard and lots of other goodies.  Check them out!
