Fiorella’s Jack Stack Barbecue

You truly haven’t dined in Kansas City until you have eaten at Fiorella’s Jack Stack Barbecue.  Us locals just call it “Jack Stack.”  Where elegant dining meets amazing barbecue, Jack Stack is the place to impress those out-of-town relatives.  Yum, just thinking about those burnt ends is making me hungry!

…Classy Dining

Taste:  I have lost track of the times that we have eaten at Jack Stack’s and I can tell you, their food is consistent.  Always hot and well seasoned, you can tell that their management has a tight reign on consistency and quality.

Presentation: Nothing too amazing here but the food is always nicely presented.  They serve their iconic onion rings on a little pole and that jazzes things up a bit.

Originality: While there isn’t really anything original about another bbq joint, Jack Stack rises above them all by bringing a classy atmosphere to the bbq experience without sacrificing taste.  Say what you like, but I believe that you don’t need to eat at a gas station to get the best barbecue in town.

Service: My experiences here have been a little mixed.  Sometimes I get a friendly server, sometimes I get a server who is a little more “hands-off.”  We’ve always had nice experiences but some servers have been more attentive than others.

Appearance: The Country Club Plaza location is very lovely with large chandeliers and decor yet it keeps a cozy feel to it also.  I love taking people here for the first time- this restaurant was made to impress!

Value: Meat entrees range from $15 to $30+ and dinner salads around about $10 depending on what you get.  Most entrees come with a side and after everything is said and done, it is plenty of food to share.  Lots of people split entrees two-ways and everybody leaves with full bellies.

Restrooms: Nothing remarkable here, but they are always clean.

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit

Designed after Texas-style BBQ, Dickey’s Barbecue Pit has been a mainstay of our family since we heard that kids eat free on Sundays.  They drew us in with their Sunday special and we keep on coming back for more because of their great bites at rock bottom prices. And with unlimited soft-serve- what is there not to love about this place?

Pile on the Sauce

Taste: Their slow-cooked meats are cooked to mouth-watering perfection.  They have a wide variety of sauces and my favorite is the original.  Make sure to get some “onion tangles” and Kyle loves their mac n’ cheese.

Presentation: All of the food comes in little baskets and just remember, it ain’t gormet, it’s bbq.  Just relax and dig in.

Originality: This is only a bbq place, but one thing that does make it stick out is it’s Texas-Style meat prep.  All your standard fare can be found here, but it is oh-so-tastey!

Service: The customer service experience here is pretty minimal because all you do is order at the front, they hand you the food and then you’re done.  You fill your own drinks and bus your own table so the focus is more on the food than the service.

Appearance: With cozy tables with blue calico tables clothes and a few TVs up, eating at Dickey’s feels very close to home.  They run children’s programing on one TV and sports on the other so everybody has something to watch.

Value: Every sandwich meal comes with two sides and runs about $9, not including drinks.      Since kids eat free on Sundays, we can pile high the food for all four of us for about $20.  They also run several different weeknight specials, check out their website for more info.

Restrooms:  Nothing special here, but they keep ‘em clean.

So next time it’s Sunday and you have a hankering for some good bbq, hit up Dickey’s and we’ll see ya there!

Oklahoma Joe’s

Winner of numerous awards, featured on The Travel Channel, a local favorite and always crowded, Oklahoma Joe’s is the place to go when your inner carnivore is demanding to be fed.

Still Hungry.

Taste: Delicious mouth-watering sandwiches (may we recommend the beef brisket?) and the onion rings are addictive.  And you know this place is good when it was the only spot that I could go and “finally feel full” during pregnancy.  Oh, and their sauce is off the chain, finger-lickin’ tasty.

Presentation: They keep things a little rough here (no snobs allowed) by piling all the food in a small basket.  The entire experience feels kinda claustrophobic so if you don’t like tight spaces, we recommend carry-out.

Originality: BBQ joints are a dime a dozen in the Kansas City Area.

Service: Again, I have found the service to be a little rough as well.  They are usually so busy that you have to wait in line for at least 20 minutes until you are able to order from the difficult-to-read menu.  It seems that they just want to get through all of the customers so they aren’t too concerned with being overly friendly in the process.

Appearance:  They jam all these small tables in their restaurant so again, just get take-out if you don’t like being jammed into a small space like a sardine.  I will say though, that it’s a great place to bring kids because if my toddlers get a little loud, nobody minds.

Value: A sandwich, side and drink can easily add up to $15 but for BBQ, it’s not a bad price point.

Restrooms: Pretty average, but always clean.

So what are your thoughts on Oklahoma Joe’s?  Tired of all the hype?  Or the best thing since sliced-bread?
